BPG Becomes Employee Owned

Oct 15, 2020

BPG Architects and Surveyors, founded in 1988 will become Employee Owned as from 15th October 2020.

Robin Goddard, Chris Bula and Roger Mahoney remain as directors but the Employee Owned business format will allow new directors to be appointed from within the practice to develop and sustain the business into the future.

BPG strongly value sustainability and environmental/social responsibility as their main practice values thus the move to Employee Ownership was a natural decision. Becoming Employee Owned shows that the board recognise the value of its employees and their contribution to the success of the business. This decision will provide stability for the future of the practice, incentivise growth and encourage staff commitment and performance.

BPG have been providing Architectural and Surveying services in London and across the south east since 1988. With 32 years’ experience, they provide diverse property and construction related professional services across a variety of sectors ranging from residential housing schemes to the regeneration of healthcare facilities. Throughout this time they have established relationships with many public, private and corporate bodies developing a reputation for sound advice, responsible design and successful project delivery, most recently completing a £22 million re-cladding exercise of two twenty-storey plus tower blocks in Wandsworth.

The Employee Ownership Trust was introduced by the government in 2014 to encourage more shareholders to set up a corporate structure similar to the John Lewis model and there are now some 470 companies who have converted to this business model. As well as tax incentives for the business, staff can receive tax free annual bonuses.

As part of the Employee Ownership transfer process, BPG has also become a member of the Employee Ownership Association (EOA), the organisation behind Employee Ownership Day which, now in its eighth year, celebrates the many UK businesses that have become employee owned. The latest EOA statistics can be found here.

Deb Oxley Chief Executive of the EOA said: “We congratulate BPG on its move to employee ownership – sustaining its values and independence for the longer term by making its employees custodians of the business for future generations.”

“Businesses that give employees a stake and a say build trust and shared responsibility, therefore uniting leaders and employees behind a common purpose. This leaves the business in a better position to flex, innovate and adapt – key qualities needed for the UK to be able to Build Back Better.”
