On 23 June, the built environment paused to mark International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) — an annual moment to recognise the women designing, surveying and building the world around us. It matters because, across engineering and the wider built environment, women remain significantly underrepresented. Days like INWED shine a light on the talent already driving the sector forward, and on the importance of opening doors for the next generation.
At BPG Architects + Surveyors, it’s a cause close to home, because our own architecture team tells a story we’re genuinely proud of.
A changing picture
Our architecture team didn’t always look the way it does today. When the department was established in 2002, it was a very different picture. Over the years, we’ve welcomed more and more women into the practice, a shift that gathered real momentum when Maria Poveda joined us in 2017.
Maria now directs the team, and her leadership and expertise are helping shape the future of our practice. Today, more than two-thirds of our architecture team are women, a figure that keeps growing alongside the business.
The women bucking the trend
In a sector where women are still in the minority, our team is proud to be doing things differently.
Looking forward
We’re proud of how far this has come, and excited to keep supporting and celebrating the women driving our work forward. Representation isn’t a box to tick; it’s a strength that shapes better design, sharper thinking and a more resilient practice for the years ahead.
To every woman building a career in architecture, surveying and engineering: we see you, and we’re behind you.
BPG Architects + Surveyors is a Dorking-based architecture and surveying practice working across the South East and beyond. Get in touch to find out how our team can support your next project.
